Jog Blog - Starting Over
Wednesday October 4, 2006
My training has started for the Bath Half Marathon next year.
“Isn’t that a bit previous?” I hear you cry (well, probably not, unless you’re Ray Winstone or Bob Hoskins).
“Why so early?” I am more likely to hear you enquire.
Yes I am early, but I have my reasons.

Well I did it, and apart from some sore inner thighs, very stiff legs and a blister taking up most of my right foot, I didn’t come out of it too badly.
Prior to this race I had premonitions of my body suddenly giving in on me as it warned “you can’t keep living your life like a 20 year old and THEN think you can get up on a Sunday morning and run a half marathon!” Well, I didn’t live my life like a 20 year old last night as I was in bed by 9.30. But I do sometimes. So I was worried that I might have to drop out of the race due to either a) lack of serious training b) excess weight gain from recent holiday c) increasing age. But the thing was, even though I did have an early night I still found it hard to get up, and getting ready and having breakfast took a great deal of effort.

A week to go. Seven short little days to go.
This is going through my head as I embark on my Sunday evening run. Despite the heat, the downs are chock-a-block with red-faced joggers. I join them all in a last ditch attempt to get up to speed for next week’s big race.
Monday morning and I am sore in places that I don’t want to mention. But let the countdown continue. This is going to be a week of baked potatoes, pasta and ice cream. And walking very carefully.
Six short little days to go.

A brisk forty five minute jog, pounding round and round the park, half uphill and half downhill. This is a really busy park. Lots of kids, some with their skateboards and others jumping out at me from behind bushes. Dogs chasing one another and considering the delights of chasing me. A small group of people preparing for their nightly Tai-Chi. A white van parked so far up the kerb that I have to run in the road. I hear Portishead playing as I charge by. People coming out of their houses and pointing at their cars to make them beep. A woman wrestling with a bike to keep a small girl upright and other runners now starting to look familiar, although they don’t yet make eye contact.
