Futoshiki #6

Saturday November 4, 2006

Fingers crossed that today’s Guardian puzzle will be a hard one…

Anyone after more futoshiki puzzles might also like to visit print futoshiki at justplayfreegames.

Elsewhere, angry letters are being posted on the BBC Blog, and it looks like The Guardian aren’t being allowed to forget their howler just yet…

Futoshiki Reborn

Saturday October 28, 2006

The Guardian’s new and improved Futoshiki puzzle is promised today. Only one possible solution, and let’s hope it’s a hard one! I’ll be posting the puzzle as soon as I can, but feel free to post your solutions as soon as you can crack it…

Futoshiki #4

Saturday October 21, 2006

The Guardian Futoshiki number four is published today. After only one week, the Futoshiki Challenge has changed from being simply:
‘be the first to solve the puzzle’
to the unexpected:
‘see how many different solutions you can come up with’
to the confusing:
‘see who’s the first to spot the reprint of last week’s puzzle’.

I emailed The Guardian about this, as did a lot of other people who have commented on this site. From the feedback I’ve received, the same email went out to everybody. It’s been quoted already in comments on another post, but here it is again:

As many of you have pointed out there have been multiple solutions to the new Futoshiki puzzles we have been publishing in the Saturday paper. We compounded the error by publishing the puzzle number two twice in preceding weeks. Our puzzle scribes are now working on a new batch with a single solution, and the first of these will be published on Saturday October 28.
apologies and best wishes

(Assistant Readers’ editor)

I’m intrgued about the puzzle scribes. How many do you think they have working for them and is this a recent recruitment drive?

The challenge is still on. Feel free to post single solutions to today’s puzzle, multiple solutions to today’s puzzle, more feedback you may have received from The Guardian and anything else Futoshiki related…

So I Emailed The Guardian...

Saturday October 14, 2006

I’m not the first person to contact The Guardian about Futoshiki following today’s comments, but here’s what I said:

I have been in contact with a number of fans of the popular new puzzle Futoshiki. It appears that there are multiple solutions to the puzzles that have been appearing in The Guardian every Saturday. We realise that this could be a flaw in the puzzle (there are now a couple of online generators available to test this theory) but are surprised that this quirk hasn’t been ironed out of The Guardian puzzles. After all, aren’t they all hand crafted…?

I forgot to mention that this week’s was a duplicate of last week’s, but let’s let them off that one for the time being…

Futoshiki Challenge

Saturday October 14, 2006

The Guardian Futoshiki number three is published today. I’ll be posting the puzzle here as soon as I can, but the challenge to solve it is already open for whoever sees it before then. Submit your answers here…

Following last week’s post, there has been some doubts raised over this weekly puzzle as two alternative solutions were submitted to this website. What’s going on? Is Futoshiki flawed? We’ll see, but it’s still interesting to see other people’s solutions, especially if I get stuck.

So, today’s Futoshiki. Any ideas?
